Alisan, 1st level half-elf Phaulkonian cleric, 8 hp, henchwoman of Rangorn
And a new party gathered to battle evil in Petethal… merciless, unforgiving, and packed to the gills with anatomy bonuses…
A brief history of the characters:
Rangorn, a half-Cromwellian/half-elf whose family fled Cromwell due to persecution, grew up in End-of-the-Road in Dunador as a casual Nevronian. He took his anatomy lessons as a woodsman very seriously and despises evil humanoids. His archery skill was reasonably strong, and in 2177 was able to secure a position as a member of the Stone Soules adventuring party (partly through connections with Runt, Canstin’s new-at-the-time henchwoman). He adventured with the Stone Soules for 8 years (gaining nearly as many levels!) and picked up a powerful magic falchion that particularly mangled ogres. By 2185, Rangorn had become sufficiently intrigued by Alegra and the Phaulkonians in the Soules that he tossed off his casual Nevronian attitude and gave Phaulkon a shot. After the Soules broke up, Rangorn spent a few years patrolling Tan-El and was part of the Daring Dozen excursions into the City of the Gods. After the abortive Borglyn adventure (i.e., “The Game That Was Not”) and the loss of his first henchman Luke to a nest of harpies (in “Alegra’s Company Saves the Roc”), Rangorn spent a few years on a hammock in Petethal (“They Call This Work?”). He also did manage to train extensively as a scout with the Army [Scouting X 3 – Rangorn’s sixth-level feat]. In 2190, Rangorn went on the quest to liberate the Fane of the Winds, and after the group was victorious in reclaiming the shrine at the top of the mountain and rebuilding the Altar Stone, became a Warder of Phaulkon. He has tried especially hard to do Good in the cause of Phaulkon since that time. In 2191, he returned to Depwood and gained membership in the Brotherhood of Rangers to seek out and hunt evil humanoids in Petethal and for the future… who knows?
Star, a Petethalian human, joined the Stone Soules in the early days as Alegra’s henchman (the first henchman of many to come in the party’s history!), and he is a veteran of many adventures. After the Stone Soules broke up in 2185, Alegra released Star from service as her henchman. Indeed, Star had advanced as far as he could as a henchman and had overcome his initial reluctance to adventure and travel independently. As testament to this, Star spent a large block of time as a missionary among the bird-people (aaracockra) in the mountains of Shabrund.. After the Fane of the Winds was liberated, Star truly came into his own, and decided to become a full adventurer in his own right. Given the need for various combat and other skills which Star did not possess, his first thought was to join up with fellow ex-Stone Soule and Phaulkonian brother, Rangorn. Star fights with crossbows and possesses a magical heavy crossbow which is capable of great accuracy over very large distances (a bonus with his great eyesight!). He is also known to possess a few other strange and exotic powers that have served him well over the years.

We approach the foot of the mountains and realize that we need to go across, below or through the mountain. We find out from some salamanders that there is a guy in the caves. The humanoid eats the salamanders, so the salamander does not go through the caves anymore. We use Silence spells to approach him. The man has red hair.

We spot three ogres in armor and insignia. They are muddy and demand food to let us pass. Way off in the mountains is a big army. The giants will make us join the army. They have heard that there is a land of free ogres here.
There is a road over the mountains. The talking rocks guard the road and demanded all their money to let them pass.
They decide to run as the party argues about what to do and we have the blood hawks bring them down in a shower of gruesomeness.

  • Balinor and Morty Summary #1: Vengeance!

Rupert, 4th level ranger, 46 hp, played by David Bjorlin
Chelios, 4th level woodsman, 40 hp, played by Katherine Anderson

Morhion Gendahar, 2nd level Northerner cleric of Nevron, 18 hp, henchman of Balinor
Brenda Mor, 4th level thief/3rd level mage, 15 hp, played by Jay
The theme was vengeance. The various events recounted herein took place on Lendore Isle from May 2191-November 2191, and in the real world on January 31st and February 1st, 2004.
When we last left this particular section of Telvar, the Seapoint Lightning, the Killer Bees, Morty’s Party (the Band), and a trio of Korians had defeated a thousand-year-old vampiress and her lantern of shadows, clearing a small island a few days south of the western coastal town of Seapoint. Morty’s party had been missing for almost exactly 30 years in an insidious mirror trap, and Morty’s bardic thesis had gone well out of date, forcing him to resume research. His future book, a Hitchhiker’s Guide to Lendore, will now also contain large “Then and Now” sections so that Morty’s old research could still be put into print.
Morty needed to re-tour the Isle, and Balinor’s party was without a mission, and thus a merger seemed inevitable. After dispatching a small band of bugbears and a few fungus beetles, Albee and Anselm (a Nevronian monk and cleric in the Killer Bees) returned to the Church in Barnacus, leaving us low on healing magic. Thus the party sought out a cleric or druid to fill in the gap. What we got…
While hanging around in Barnacus waiting for some training to complete, we encountered Tarplin, a druid had decided to take up the life of a flutist, traveling from town to town and providing entertainment in taverns. Morty and Balinor spoke with him, and decided that he could fill the gap created by Anselm’s absence. Morty had heard things about him, but he resolved to look into the matter and determine the truth of the rumors.

  • The Eighth Telvar Open Tournament

    4 October 2003 / 10 June 2192 B.Y.
    The Edge of Memory
“It’s a hint,” the Sphinx said. “It just won’t make any sense until you already know the answer.”
    Prelude:
On April 1st, 2188, on the island of Race Rock [during the Sixth Telvar open], events were set in motion that once again drew the attention of the Kraken back to Telvar. The Kraken, aircraft carrier-sized squid creatures, the great evil of ages past, had once enslaved most of the world with their mind-affecting powers.
With their baleful eye upon Telvar, only terror and evil could possibly result…
But there remained many forces arrayed against the return of the Kraken. Some known, some unknown.

…were lost.” –The Fellowship of the Ring (the film version)

  • Defenders Reunion: The Return of the King, and the Sliming of the King

Felix, 8th level half-orc fighter, 75 hp, played by Alex
Rathbane, 5th level dwarven fighter/cleric of Clangeddin, 45 hp, played by Katherine
Donald Collins, 8th level human mage, 43 hp, NPC
Gates, 6th level dwarven cleric of Moradin, 39 hp, played by Aaron
Hendel, 7th level dwarven thief, 38 hp, played by Joel
Nakumanu, 5th level orc fighter, 32 hp, henchman of Felix
    History
The detailed origins of this reunion go significantly back into the pages of the Restenford Defenders, an adventuring party founded upon and dragged through the trials of Lendore Isle.
One of the three fighters this party featured was a strong and charismatic half-orc of unknown parentage named Felix, from “Mork and Gork know where.” Felix joined the party within a few months of its founding in 2172 and rapidly rose in power and skill. In 2177, during the Defenders’ expedition to the “Orcipelago,” Felix acquired a former prisoner blue-skinned orc as a henchman, the falchion-wielding Nakumanu.
In 2179, an adamantium shortsword was created, among the most powerful weapons in Telvar. This intelligent sword, a lawful diplomatic weapon we dubbed Peacemaker, adopted Felix and became part of his persona. The sword enjoys fishing and collects shields.
In 2182, the Defenders unknowingly entered a holy testing ground for the ancient dwarven kingdom on Lendore, thinking it to be a local ruin called “The Sentry.” Inside Felix passed a test of a riddle and a battle, unexpectedly becoming the first king of the dwarves of Lendore Isle in several thousand years, and receiving two important items—a hammer, and a crown.
Unfortunately, Felix and the Defenders knew little of the history and the significance of Felix’s new position. As Felix left for the mainland to train, dwarven emissaries from the White Mountain dwarves and the Shabrundian dwarves followed him, hoping to barter for the crown and hammer. There was a third faction representing the hidden dwarves of Lendore Isle, who now worship an evil god known as the Burrower (actual name Beranar, I think). They disguised themselves as the White Mountain dwarf emissary to discover that Felix was in Teft, and bargained with him, offering money. When Felix hesitated, the dwarves struck.

The Larry Consortium reassembled to continue the depopulation of Wizard Mountain.
Joining us were old timers Halacar, Standish, Browork, Brigling, Flechette and Megan, and newcomers Milo and Sevrid. We decided to tackle our very first enemy in the history of the Consortium—the goblin fortress. We had approached it on our first trek into the mountain, and been driven back by hurled rocks.
This time we had a plan. And it worked just well enough to hang us.
The party advanced forward toward the cliff face, and as we reached the point where we could spot the cliff, a trap deployed from the ceiling, dropping boulders on the front of the party. Fortunately Halacar and Standish were hardly injured by the impact, and the attack continued. Sevrid stepped forward and dropped a Wall of Fog that hid the combatants from view of the goblins—and vice versa. In fact, we were unaware of our surroundings. But knowing that the cliff face was up ahead, and with Standish and Halacar Spider Climbed by Milo, the party charged.
The two fighters and the thief began shimmying up the cliff face and heard shouts from above. Boulders were rolled down the cliff, covering it in rocks, but only Brigling was dislodged, taking minimal damage, and began climbing back up. The rest of the party heard a drawbridge being lowered… and all the boulders from the cliff rolled down the center of the room, nearly crushing the party. Fortunately we evaded the worst of the rocks (Milo and Sevrid were missed entirely). The fighters crested the top and heard goblins running, but couldn’t figure out where they were going due to strange echoes. The remainder of the party clambered up the cliff, and we advanced into what turned out to be a corridor, stepping on some pressure plate that set off a ringing noise, incessantly.
We could hear some shouting up ahead, and we advanced—and then a Lightning Bolt came screaming down the corridor, bouncing perfectly off the walls, and striking the party. Milo and Sevrid were killed, and Brigling had to be saved by a Death’s Door. When a second bolt came at us, we decided that discretion was the better part of valor and turned and ran away, dragging our wounded and discarding our pride on the floor of the corridor.
Having failed to kill even a single goblin, and down two party members, we decided that the goblins should be left alone for awhile.
