BLADES Summary #62 - Winter 2193 in New Teft

September 11, 2193 to April 15, 2194
The BLADES head home to see what they can do with the 62 paintings and investigate a couple of options for declaring war on other groups (The Immortal Ogress and the Insane Dwarf Posse) to remove the potential threats they represent.

The Immortal Ogress is a very high priestess of Vaprack – the Ogre & Troll god of Destruction. She does damage the ecosystem, but is not very dangerous to the colony unless we mess with her. She could kill about 75% of the Republic with an Insect Plague. Joreth thinks there a couple of dozen Ogres and a dozen Trolls and probably several more clerics of Vaprack. He is strongly against the destruction of her two long boats if we move against her as we would prefer her to flee to the sea rather than go to ground. She doesn’t seem to be doing much differently than she has before.

Kruklek writes an article for us about the paintings that Arthur did with the Ancient Spirit. Kruklek has specialties in Squishy races’ anthropology and other helpful subjects. It costs us 1000 in credit and another favor to basically advertise the existence of the paintings in the “right” circles. We still owe him for Arthur’s Restoration.

We talk to Loba about what they’ve discovered and they have found that characters with high Dexterity can store potions of Calm in wrapped-leaf containers that they had made to lob into the mouths of meat eating dinosaurs. The can then leave the pacified dinosaur behind.
Many items come in for taxes and trade. One of the possibly interesting items is a set of Dwarven sized +2 Banded. Bergan trades for it as Raybur is in +1 Plate already and wouldn’t gain much by the trade.
There are two Heavy Crossbows available, though. One is a +2 and the other is +1, Double Range. With Arthur’s Generalize Feat, he is very lethal with doubled point blank range.

Several of us travel to the Locatha to get some research done while Fred works on rigging a net throwing device to work with the mesh that we recovered a while back from the orkish ruins.

Too much information or too much beauty or ugliness can drive a person insane. The Locatha have a fairly powerful memory disrupting potion that must be kept at a slightly chilled temperature and not shaken. It isn’t inexpensive. It is fairly brutal as well. They can help us move them, at a cost. They have experience moving food and drink that can’t be shaken.
The results of the Locatha research on the insanity – it seems to be an insanity caused by an artifact or relic. It might be broken if the victim can be separated from the source of the power, but there are no guarantees and the potion may work, but it may take extreme amounts of it to work with possible major memory losses.

We decide to send a letter to the dwarven civilization about the mad dwarven party. We get a letter back about a dwarf’s party that was last seen a hundred years ago. Gorgan showed up from the homeland and the “local” dwarves were very interested in talking to him. They had a warship. He was a very powerful adventurer. He explained that he came from the homeland on a very important mission/adventure. He said he would come back and see them on his way home and he said that it would be clear that he was the next dwarven king. He was clearly working towards that end and only briefly stopped and thought he would be back in six months. Maybe 10,000 years ago the dwarven kingdoms were united. There were 2 or 3 score dwarves on the ship but not everyone came to shore, so that is an estimate. “When they see me with an item of such beautiful craftsmanship, how can they not see me as the king?”

We receive a letter from the solicitor of Skylltor Rhune for 375,000 gold pieces for the art collection. Botsweile will probably also give an offer, but this would send them into the Old World and we would never have a chance to see them again. We responded to him. (250 gp for a letter back.)

There is a reference to Lutrixan, who was very wealthy and a distinctive political figure (in part due to his wealth). He argued that life was too complicated and he went to great effort to publicize that a society of this level of affluence should have nicer places to go visit than they had. His advertising suggested that large amounts of government logistical support should be given for his financing of this wondrous place that was good for all people. It would be a shining example to all people. There is a very brief reference that implies that this was very near the fall of the Ancients’ society. The Kraken war appeared to have just started and he wanted as many of the leading figures to go to the very secure land-based city instead of the floating ones that were common. This was one of the most secure places. There is no sense of desperation in the possible “evacuation,” but he wanted the city to be made into a safe house of sorts. The writings imply that it might have been a Sea Devil war, but in fact the Locatha sage thinks that is more likely that was in fact the Kraken war. There are also references to theatrical premieres and the like.
“I vastly prefer the lodgings in the east tower – the views and furniture are nicer.” Most people stayed in the East and West Hotels and they are tall. (We think they overlook the major lake/bay.) There are references to The Spa. There rich complain about the lack of affordability of The Spa, but they still think that it is worth it. There are painters, poets and sculptors. They writers of the accounts were deeply impressed and around the time the writings stopped, there were many things going on. “The museum shop is so wonderful and you can even pay to talk to the artists.” There is a fairly brief reference to Director Lutrixan. He is Director because he owns it. There is a comment that a phalanx of Ancients’ soldiers brought Lutrixan’s greatest treasure when dark things started to happen back in the Capitol. The treasure seemed to be very small, but very valuable. They believe that it was delivered to the workshop of the gem cutters at The Resort. “It is a patriotic thing to allow the treasure to be used to generate wealth to fund further war efforts.”
There is an incredibly nice theater. More than one restaurant is in The Resort. There were some annoyed rich people, who said gossip columnists were hired to annoy them by the media. There were many things to buy in the Artisans’ Mall. They were clearly made by the finest for the finest. It is also clear that the dinosaurs were here and that people came to watch them.

Another tidbit from the dwarves is that Gorgan’s closest companion, Zeether, was a high priest of Clanggedin.

March 7, 2194
We receive a letter from the National Archives of the Realm. That offer is 400,000 gold pieces in cash or gems. There are several other offers that range from 100,000 to 250,000 gold, but we ignore them.

April 6, 2194
We arrive back at the Resort. We fortify a bit in preparation for trying to draw the dwarves out to either escort them back to a cure or fight, capture or kill them.

April 11, 2194
We drop off the letter from the dwarven Prince to Gorgan asking Gorgan to come visit.

April 13, 2194
The note vanishes.

April 15, 2194
Nothing happens over the course of two days, so we send our ship on its way and prepare to go back to skirting the dwarves, but probably we will start camping in the Taxidermist’s House.
